Corrosion Resistance: Head-to-Head

Seawater Service — The Critical Difference

316L in seawater: resists corrosion up to approximately 30°C at low velocity, no-crevice conditions. Above this, pitting and crevice corrosion become likely within months to years. At 60°C+ in seawater, 316L will pit rapidly — often within weeks in high-velocity or aerated conditions.

Monel 400 in seawater: no pitting at any temperature, including boiling seawater. This is why it has been used for condenser tubes, seawater valves, and pump shafts in marine service for 80+ years. The copper content is the key — it provides cathodic protection to the nickel matrix.

🔬 Critical Temperature Threshold

If your seawater system operates above 50°C: do not use 316L. You need either Duplex 2205/2507 (cost-effective upgrade), super austenitic 904L/254 SMO (higher chloride resistance), or Monel 400 (for the most demanding service). Wrong material choice in this application is not a matter of if failure occurs — only when.

Chloride Pitting Resistance

316L has a pitting resistance equivalent (PRE) of approximately 24-26. This means in chloride solutions above approximately 500 ppm at moderate temperatures, pitting becomes a risk. For reference, seawater contains 19,000-25,000 ppm chlorides.

Monel 400, with no iron content and high copper, has effectively infinite resistance to chloride pitting in natural seawater. It will not pit regardless of chloride concentration or temperature.

Note: Monel 400 has similar strength to 316L at room temperature but significantly better strength at elevated temperatures. At 300°C, Monel 400 yield strength is approximately 2x that of 316L.

Weldability

316L is the easier choice. Standard GTAW or GMAW with 316L filler wire (ER316L). Wide process window, forgiving of minor heat control variations, minimal crack sensitivity. Preheating is not required for thin sections. Standard austenitic stainless steel welding procedure (WPS) applies.

Monel 400 requires more care. Use ERNiCu-7 filler wire (AWS A5.14, UNS N06060). Keep interpass temperature below 120°C. Use high-purity argon shielding gas. No drafts near the weld — even small amounts of air can cause porosity in nickel welds. Never substitute 316L filler wire — it will cause galvanic attack in service. Both grades are PWHT-free after welding.

Cost & Sourcing

316L is dramatically cheaper. Current market pricing (2026):

The 4-6x cost difference means: never use Monel 400 where 316L is adequate. Use Monel 400 where 316L will fail prematurely — the higher material cost will be recovered many times over in reduced downtime, repairs, and replacement.

Availability: 316L is one of the most widely stocked materials globally — available from any stainless steel distributor within days. Monel 400 requires mill order or specialist stockists — lead time typically 4-8 weeks from mill.

When to Choose Each Material

Choose 316L when:

• Food and beverage processing
• Architectural applications in coastal areas (no hot seawater)
• Medical and pharmaceutical equipment
• General chemical processing below 60°C
• Budget-constrained projects with suitable conditions
• Components requiring complex welding fabrication

Choose Monel 400 when:

• Seawater service above 50°C
• High-velocity seawater (pump shafts, impellers)
• Hydrofluoric acid at any concentration
• Sour gas production (H2S > 0.05% + CO2)
• Concentrated caustic at elevated temperature
• Desalination plant brine heaters
• Any application where 316L has failed before

What About Duplex or Super Austenitic as Middle Ground?
